What is the United way and is it important?
People say that United's performance against the scousers this Sunday just gone was much improved. Well, judged on recent showings, it would have taken some effort to get any worse that's for sure. I do draw the line however, when anyone says that it was more like the real Man United.
The truth is that Klopp was right, United relied on a tactic of defending deep and counter attacking using diagonal balls over the top to the strikers. The plan was to expose Liverpool's centre backs when their fullbacks bombed forward. And to be fair it did seem to work for the first half for sure. But these sort of tactics show how the mighty have fallen over the past decade.
Liverpools manager (the over laugher) Klopp changed things at half time and showed what a good tactician he is himself, pushing midfielders further forward stopping United's wingbacks having so much time on the ball. Ole did not or could not counter this.

Yes I am afraid we are talking tactics. It is my opinion that any team that is forced to employ tactics down to the letter of what the manager has imposed on them, stops them being able to play in a spontaneous manner and enjoy their football.
This for me is not the United way!
Ok a team has to have some basic tactics but it was the great Alex Ferguson's mantra to say at the end of any team talk and always before sending his team on the pitch. "Make sure you enjoy yourselves"
United have lost their identity and have been forced into such tactics because they do not have good enough players and are not a good enough team. They are more than not these days finding themselves facing better opposition or teams that are well set up and forced to defend. United have themselves have been forced into this tactic way too much for a club of such stature. Not that I am saying they have a divine right to success, no-one does. It is always achieved through hard work aligned with a little bit of luck thrown in for good measure.
So, however much it pains me to say it, Liverpool at this moment in time are quite clearly a better team than United and even though Klopp himself used tactics, his were positive and did not restrict his team.
It's not a question of whether the tactics are successful as they were famously in Paris last year. It's more a case that coaches since Ferguson have all felt the need to employ these systems as they are combating teams that are stronger in most departments.
The reason I am a United fan is as follows. It's known I am from Hull and as a kid my dad would take me to see the Tigers on a regular basis at Boothferry Park in the old 3rd and 4th division. Even though I now look back with fondness for these occasions, for a 7/8 year old, it was mostly quite arduous. I got through it by looking forward to trying to catch a signed ball at the start of a game and then my half time packet of sweets (or goodies as my dad would say being more ingrained in the Hull accent than me, coming from the posh bit of Swanland as I do).
Seeing Man Utd play in the 1985 Fa Cup final was the first time that I really recognised football as a form of entertainment and this was a monumental moment for me. This team could play proper glamorous football, even with 10 men. Believe it or not they were the underdogs back then and the Everton team had just won the league. Most of my friends supported Liverpool, and still do to this day for that matter. At that period they had been the best team for quite some time. But for me they were boring and relied way too much on the back pass law. Grobbelaar would endlessly roll the ball out to Hansen who then kicked it back for the goalkeeper to pick up. They would do this several times, especially when they were winning games.
It can't go unnoticed that indeed Liverpool have not won the league championship since this law was changed at the start of the Premier league era.
Going back to United it was a real love at first site thing and something that has never been knocked out of me even when as an adult you realise you should support the club from where you hale, which I do and try to go to Hull's games when I am back in the uk. United though is in my heart and always will be. Someone once said to me that you can change your women but you can't change your football team, ha!
So where do we go from here? This is the billion pound conundrum. And I don't think sacking the manager would help unless they could get a modern genius of the game in the ilk of Klopp or Guardiola. But as we all know there are not many about. So it is looking a bit like the dodgy political climate that we are all forced to endure right now and that us United fans will have to play the long game and hope for the good times to come back one day.
I bet you all feel sorry for us now right??? Errm maybe not.

Well look at the odds on who will be the next United manager. Zinedine Zidane is odds on favourite at 8/11. Then after that there is Antonio Conte at 10/1 (seriously like he would improve the style of play). We have Mauricio Pochettino at 14/1 (wishful thinking). Howe is currently 33/1 so it seems unlikely he could take up the mantel. However as you can see there are not that many candidates out there that fit the bill, so a change of direction could be an option and it does look like a rebuilding job from the ground upwards is needed what with so many star performers not performing. Lets just leave it there shall we as I really don't have a clue what the powers that be above United are thinking. I do agree with Gary Neville though that there seems to be a lack of football knowledge at the top. CEO Ed Woodward seems to exemplify this. Its easy to say things all went wrong when Fergie left the helm but it can't go unnoticed that the previous CEO David Gill left at a similar time and he knew his onions and seemed to care about United with a passion. I have read many an article in which Fergie said he would not have had half as much success without the working relationship they enjoyed together.
I want to finish with some straight bullet points about some if not all of the problems I have with the current situation.

Lukaku is a flat track pony, his record against the bigger teams for United is atrocious. I honestly don't remember a single goal scored by him in 2 and half years against the big 6 in England apart from when the team was 3 down or against any decent European teams. Mourinho has made some big mistakes over the years ie selling De Bruyne while at Chelsea, but deciding that Lukaku would be the focal point of this United side has been a disaster.
-
Mourinho style of play does not fit with United's philosophy and thus he should never have been employed in the first place. It was a desperate measure as they lost out on Guardiola.
-
Valencia as captain says a lot to me. He is a decent enough player but not a great and always prone to a mistake or two. As for Ashley Young captaining the team in his absence, don't get me started. Think of the great captains, Robson, Bruce, Keane, Cantona, Beckham (ok mainly for England).

I would like to see Mourinho, Ed Woodward and Pogba all leave.

HOWE TO SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MOURINHO?
Watching United these days is difficult, I often fall asleep. Last night nights champions league game was an other poor showing. For me, lack of effort is not the problem, like the man in charge is suggesting. No, its a pure lack of class that is the problem. There was a turn over of play in last nights game in which that flat track bully, Lukaku, picked up a loose ball in the opposing half having 3 or 4 team mates moving forward with him with a chance to get at a depleted defence. I have been royally spoilt watching United teams from my youth turning these moments into goals as quickly as the sadly departed Brucey could turn his fingers to say 321. This United outift (I struggle to say team) are very different to all those that Fergie gave us the pleasure of seeing. Sluggishly, the big lump took too long to find a pass and the Valencia team reformed and the attack fizzled out.
I am sure the tabloid press would have been proud of my headline 'Howe to solve a problem like Mourinho'. But could this really be an option?

Hello and welcome to my blog. I know it is 2017 but as it happens I am completely new to blogging
so I am aware that I am probably doing it wrong. I will rectify this over the coming weeks :)
Anyway this is not only a new blog but more importantly the launch of my new website. I have completely re-branded myself with a new logo and a more sophisticated business type look that better represents what it is that I do; Motion Design & Illustration.
I plan to add my observations on the world we live in and will be regularly posting links to amazing artworks, videos that are inspiring me. I will let you know my thoughts on the world of politics, sport, film, music, literature and more. For now I am posting a link to my old website as even though I am happy with how my new look has worked out, there is a little part of me that is sorry to see the old children's board games style go. Enjoy!
